Students from our Academy attended the Horizons Council event at Balcarras School. The event focused on giving young people in Cheltenham a voice to discuss how to improve safety and accessibility in public spaces.
A recent survey showed that many young people in Cheltenham often feel unsafe. In response, our academy students participated in discussions about solutions. Our academy has been chosen as the partnership school to work with Lord Mayor Paul Baker on improving recreational spaces in the community.
Discussions included the impact of large-scale events like the Cheltenham races and festivals, which bring many visitors to the town. Our students suggested enhancing existing areas, such as the Brewery Quarter, with more free and safe spaces for young people to gather.
A key part of the event was our students’ presentation to a panel including representatives from Cheltenham Borough Council, Parliament, and the No Child Left Behind team. Their presentation highlighted practical ways to address these issues.
We appreciate Lord Mayor Paul Baker for his support and for engaging with our students throughout the day. His input encouraged further discussions on making positive changes.
We are proud of our students for their participation and commitment to making Cheltenham a safer place for young people.
