From Sixth Form to Public Service: Mat Palewski’s Journey
Mat Palewski, a former student of All Saints’ Academy, has taken an exciting path from Sixth Form to working in politics. Now a parliamentary caseworker, he looks back on his time at school, his university experience, and how he found his way into public service.
Sixth Form
At Sixth Form, Mat studied Sociology, History, and Business—subjects that got him thinking critically about the world. But it wasn’t just the lessons that shaped him. He credits his teachers and the supportive atmosphere at All Saints’ Academy for helping him grow in confidence, both academically and personally.
One of his standout memories is co-hosting a political hustings event with his classmate Alex. It was a big moment—grilling local politicians like Alex Chalk, George Penny, and Max Wilkinson in front of an audience. That experience cemented his interest in politics and public debate.
But Mat wasn’t just about politics. He also helped bring Sixth Formers together, organising an icebreaker event to connect Year 12 and Year 13 students. On top of that, he played a key role in a Young Minds charity event, raising awareness and funds for youth mental health—something he still feels strongly about today.
University and the wider world
After Sixth Form, Mat studied Liberal Arts at the University of Nottingham. This allowed him to study a range of topics such as Philosophy & Ethics, Politics and Business.
University wasn’t just about academics, though. Mat threw himself into new experiences, taking up running and mountaineering. He completed the Cheltenham Half Marathon and even climbed Scafell Pike—something he’s particularly proud of.
Travel also became a huge part of his life. He explored Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, visiting places like Budapest and Kharkiv, and venturing into the remote landscapes of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. One of his most memorable moments? Riding a moped through Vietnam’s winding mountain roads, soaking up the culture and connecting with locals.
Working in politics
These days, Mat works as a parliamentary caseworker, supporting a local MP and helping constituents with issues that matter to them. His role involves everything from liaising with local authorities to handling policy-related enquiries. It’s a job that blends research, problem-solving, and people skills—something he finds both challenging and rewarding.
Interestingly, he never formally studied politics. But his passion for it was clear from the start. Events like the Sixth Form hustings and the 2019 mock general election at All Saints’ Academy gave him a taste of political engagement, helping him develop the analytical and communication skills he uses in his job today.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, Mat wants to continue making a difference through public service. He’s considering a move into the civil service or government departments like planning, transport, or immigration. And with his language skills, he’s also got his eye on international opportunities, including the Schuman Traineeship with the European Union.
