Parliamentary Hustings at All Saints’ Academy

Posted: 21st June 2024

On Wednesday 19th June, All Saints’ Academy hosted a Parliamentary Hustings for the Tewkesbury constituency. The event was attended by students from Year 10, 12, and 13, providing them with a unique opportunity to engage with local political candidates and learn more about the democratic process.

Sara, a Year 12 student, skillfully chaired the event, ensuring that candidates adhered to their allotted times. Year 11 student, Taidhg, assisted during the question time by facilitating audience participation and managing the microphone.

Due to recent boundary changes, All Saints’ Academy now falls within the Tewkesbury constituency. As a result, the school invited all Tewkesbury candidates to participate in the hustings. The attending candidates included Cameron Thomas from the Liberal Democrats, Laurence Robertson from the Conservatives, Cate Cody from The Green Party, and David Edgar from the Christian Peoples Alliance. Unfortunately, the Labour candidate, Damola Animashaun, could not attend in person but sent an introductory video.

The hustings proved to be an insightful experience for both students and staff. Each candidate had the opportunity to address and respond to the various questions posed by the audience, leading to a lively and informative discussion on a range of topics.

Thank you to our Sixth Form film crew who captured the event, a video will be shared within the next few weeks.

In addition to the hustings, the Academy will be holding its own mock election on Thursday 4th July. Year 12 Politics students will represent popular parties and present their policies in assemblies during the week leading up to the election. All students will then have the opportunity to vote in our mock election on Thursday 4th July.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event a success. The engagement and thoughtful questions from our students demonstrated a keen interest in political issues and the workings of our government.
