Over 70 Students Take on National Junior Mathematical Challenge

Posted: 2nd May 2025

More than 70 of our talented Year 7 and 8 students put their problem-solving skills to the test yesterday as they took part in the Junior Mathematical Challenge, a prestigious national competition aimed at encouraging mathematical thinking among young people.

The Junior Mathematical Challenge, run by the UK Mathematics Trust, is a one-hour, multiple-choice challenge designed to promote mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic maths techniques. With 25 thought-provoking questions, the challenge is tailored to make students think creatively and logically, pushing them beyond the standard curriculum.

Taking part in the challenge is a fantastic opportunity for students to apply their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts, build confidence, and deepen their love for mathematics. The problems are carefully crafted to be accessible, yet still offer a real challenge to more experienced mathematicians.

Maths teacher Mrs Nicholls said, “It’s great to see so many of our students engaging with a national competition like this. The questions really make them think in different ways, and it’s a brilliant opportunity for them to explore the subject in a new way.”

We’re incredibly proud of all those who took part, and we look forward to receiving the results soon. Certificates will be awarded to students who achieve Bronze, Silver or Gold level, with the highest scorers potentially being invited to participate in follow-on rounds later in the year.

Opportunities like the Junior Mathematical Challenge are just one of the many ways our Academy encourages academic ambition, resilience, and a love of learning. Well done to all involved!
