Cadets take to the skies

Posted: 26th June 2025

The day began early for four of the Academy’s CCF cadets, who hit the road at 0600 on a stunning summer morning. Their destination was No1 Air Experience Flight (1AEF) at MOD St Athan, where they were warmly welcomed by their pilot for the day. After a thorough safety briefing, the cadets practiced using a parachute and ran through a couple of emergency drills. They were then kitted out in flying suits and helmets, ready for their adventure.

Each cadet climbed into the aircraft, strapped in, and was shown how the controls worked by their instructor. After completing some final pre-flight checks, the plane moved to the end of the runway. A quick chat with air traffic control followed, and then the engine roared to life as the plane sped down the runway and soared into the sky.

Once airborne, the instructor demonstrated the basic movements of the aircraft, before allowing the cadets to take control and fly the plane themselves. They even performed a few loops, flipping upside down over the beautiful skies of South Wales!

It was an incredible experience for everyone, with all the cadets eager to take control again.

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is open to all students, and if you want the chance to learn how to fly a plane, glide, go shooting, or take part in many other thrilling activities, why not join in? We parade every Tuesday after school, from 1530 to 1730, and meet outside Loaves and Fishes. Come along and be part of the action!
