The Health and Social Care Department is a warm and encouraging department that consistently achieves outstanding results at both Level 2 and Level 3. Health and Social Care is a practical subject that provides students with the opportunity to develop their own career in the Health and Social Care sector of their choice. Each member of the Health and Social Care department is enthusiastic and has a strong desire to equip students with the skills necessary to achieve in their chosen career.

BTEC Level 2 (Year 9, 10 & 11)
The new BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care is a level 2 qualification, graded at Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction*. Some learners may fail to achieve a full Pass at Level 2 so there is the opportunity for learners to gain a level 1 qualification.
The course has been developed in consultation with employers and educators and gives learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of a vocational sector.
The course is structured as follows:
Component 1: Human Lifespan Development
During Component 1, students will:
• explore how individuals develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually over time
• investigate how various factors, events and choices impact individuals’ growth and development
• discover how people adapt to life events and cope with making changes.
This component is internally assessed and makes up 30% of the course
Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values
During Component 2, students will:
• learn which health and social care services are available
• identify why people might need to use these services
• discover who’s involved in providing these services • explore what might stop people from accessing the services they need
• look at the care values the sector has to make sure people get the care and protection they need.
This component is internally assessed and makes up 30% of the course
Component 3 Health and Wellbeing
During Component 3, students will:
• learn what ‘being healthy’ means to different people
• explore the different factors that might influence health and wellbeing
• identify key health indicators and how to interpret them
• assess an individual’s health using what they’ve learned
• create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for that person, which includes targets and recommendations of support services available
• reflect on the potential challenges the person may face when putting the plan into action.
This component is an externally assessed task, in which students create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for an individual, based on a brief. This component makes up 40% of the course.
BTEC Level 3 (Year 12 & 13)
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care aims to provide an introduction the sector. It is for learners who are interested in learning about the health and social care sector as part of a balanced study programme. It is equivalent in size to one A Level. The qualification supports access to a range of higher education courses possibly, but not exclusively, in health and social care, if taken alongside further Level 3 qualifications. In the first year students complete units 1 and 5, and in the second units 2 and 14.
Unit 1: Human Lifespan development
This unit will develop knowledge and understanding of patterns of human growth and development. Students will explore the key aspects of growth and development, and the experience of health and wellbeing. Students will learn about factors that can influence human growth, development and human health. Some of these are inherited and some are acquired through environmental, social or financial factors during our lifespan. Students will learn about a number of theories and models to explain and interpret behaviour through the human lifespan. In this unit, students will explore the impact of both predictable and unpredictable life events, and recognise how they impact on individuals. Students will study the interaction between the physical and psychological factors of the ageing process, and how this affects confidence and self-esteem, which in turn may determine how individuals will view their remaining years. This unit is externally assessed.
Unit 5: Meeting individual care and support needs
In this unit, students will learn about the values and principles of meeting care and support needs and look at some of the ethical issues that arise when personalising care. Students will examine factors that can impact the professionals who provide the care and support, and the challenges that must be overcome to allow access to good quality care and health services. Students will explore the different methods used by professionals across all care services. Students will reflect on these methods when considering the importance of multi-agency working in providing a package of care and support that meets all the needs of individuals. This unit is internally assessed. Students will also complete a work experience placement as part of this unit.
Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care
This unit will help students to understand what it is like to work in the health and social care sector. When working for an organisation in this sector, students will have important responsibilities that they need to understand and carry out. These include maintaining the safety of and safeguarding individuals with health and social care needs, making sure that they properly handle their personal information and preventing discrimination towards them. Students will need to understand how they will be accountable both to these individuals and the regulatory bodies that represent people who work in the health and social care sector. It is necessary for students to understand how their work will be monitored when they carry out a specific role such as nurse or social worker. This unit is externally assessed
Unit 14: Physiological disorders
In this unit, students will learn about the signs and symptoms of physiological disorders and how they are investigated and diagnosed. Students will also learn about the different types of treatment and support available for individual service users, including surgery, rehabilitation and complementary therapies. Students will create a treatment plan for a service user with a specific physiological disorder. This will help them understand the treatment and support strategies involved, the contributions of different professionals and the importance of providing individualised care. This unit is internally assessed.
Students have the opportunity to attend open days at Gloucestershire University and also visit local care settings, during year 12.
Within the Health and Social Care department, all students are encouraged to continue with their work after school and during free periods.
For year 11s, catch up sessions are run on a Monday after school and year 9 and 10 students have the opportunity to work with elderly people in a local care home.
Students who have studied BTEC Level 2 Health and Social Care have often gone on to study the Level 3 course.
Once the Level 3 course is completed, students have achieved a range of University places and apprenticeships in a number of careers from nursing and midwifery, to physiotherapy and nursery nurse careers
