(Foundation diploma 540 GLH – equivalent to 1.5 A levels)

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. In addition, employers and professional bodies have been involved and consulted, in order to confirm that the content is also appropriate and consistent with current practice for students choosing to enter employment directly in the sport sector.

There are 4 Units that are: compulsory Unit 1, 2, 3, 4 and the three additional units that are: units 5, 6, 7

The following unit will be completed in year 1:

Exam Units – January

Unit 1  - Anatomy and Physiology (external exam)  -  body systems.

Unit 2 - Fitness training and programming for health, sport and wellbeing (open book external exam) – personal training type scenario.

Unit 4 - Sports leadership.

Unit 5 - Application of fitness testing.

The following unit will be completed in year 2:

Unit 3 - Professional development in the sports industry.

Unit 7 - Practical sport.

Unit 6  - Sport Psychology.

Units  3, 4, 5, 6,7 are assignment based and ongoing over the 2 years and there are various methods of assessment such as: written exam, practical, written work, presentations, coaching, leadership sessions, fitness testing sessions and interviews.


Minimum of grade 4 at GCSE or Merit at BTEC Level 2. Ideally 5s in Maths and English and a 4 in Science.
